Director and actor Sasikumar has every reason to smile. His Subramaniapuram has just been screened at Rome and he’s readying for his next films as well. He tells us all about the Rome experience and next project…

Why did you go to Rome recently?
Subramaniapuram was screened at the Asiatica Film Mediale, a film festival which is in its tenth year. That’s why I went to Rome for the first time. We stayed for five days.

Tell us about the experience of meeting people there etc.
Well I met directors from other countries like Iran etc. At the screening there were many students who asked me many questions about the film. Many loved the music and the cinematography. At the interactive session they asked me whether I was inspired by Quentin Tarantino and I said no, I had never seen his films. My inspiration is my native Madurai only.

Were the audiences exposed to Tamil films earlier?
Some of them had seen a few. Many had seen only Hindi films and expected a lot of song and dance. Overall Subramaniapuram got a great response.

What is your next project?
I am directing a city based subject which involves a 57 year old man and a youngster of 16 years. I am still looking for the right faces. Abinaya will be the heroine while the other heroine is not yet decided.

Which cities will you be shooting in?
The story is based in Chennai but we will be shooting also in Hyderabad, Bangalore and Madurai. It’s a film about city youth.
